Weekly Report 4 Feb 13

Post by Brad » Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:11 pm

A rough week to say the least ahead this week. The small window of opportunites last week saw wahoo, mahi mahi and mackerel all taken on the outer reef systems. Pearl perch features around Wide Caloundra and soon the snapper will be back in force out around the same area. The Caloundra 5, 7 and 12 mile reefs systems will fish well after the big southerly blow so plan a trip now. Trolling for pelagics will be the right way to go out wide and around the blocks situated close to Hutchies. The reef species will again be my target with unlimited opportunites once the moon phase comes into sync. Try targeting mackerel around areas like Currimundi and the 7 mile and don't forget the spoil grounds because they often produce. The channel markers within the bay are worth a shot for cobia but live bait will be essential. Finding them after the big blow is going to be difficult for the first couple of days. The inner reefs like Muyrphy's and the Gneerings are about fishing the tidal changes within the next couple of weeks so timing is the key.

The estuaries have suffered from a strong fresh so target the deeper holes and move around a lot more in search of fish. Deep areas like the cod hole and the channel leading out to the Bar area are good targets for hungry trevally and the occassional mulloway. Flathead will need to be really bothered to get active so pepper your lure in every direction and then some to get a fish. Berley is the key and plenty of patience this week anyway. Maroochy River should be full of fish after the run off from the floods around the barra park and I wonder how long it will be before the bigger fish start getting caught. Preparation week for the remainder of this one and plan plan plan for coming moon phases. Have Fun!
