Weekly Report 12 Jan 14

Finally the bait has come back on in the Pumicestone Passage with herring and pike in good numbers. This will hopefully put the larger fish on the chew like trevally, queenies, tailor and bream. Most of the bait is congregating around the pontoons and jetty areas and one cast of your cast net will give you plenty of herring to last a week. Smaller herring are excellent for bream and flathead baits and using a long shank hook is one of the best ways to rig them up. Whiting are around Bell's Creek and Coochin and working along the flats outside of Gemini Towers. Smaller bream are working near the pontoon at the Caloundra Powerboat Club and Military Jetty but early in the morning is the better time to catch them.

Offshore there are plenty of tuna around and whether you like to sight cast or just lay out baits there are enough around to give you a feed. Moffat Beach area has some mackerel around the headland area in the deeper water and Currimundi Reef and Brays Rock are other areas that are worth a troll or cast for mackerel. Reefies are around along with some spectacular pelagics at the moment. Mahi Mahi and wahoo are out around Wide Caloundra along with Spanish mackerel. January normally sees the spaniards getting bigger so good luck. Overall, it is a good time to be fishing, except for the wind. Have Fun!
