Weekly Report 8 Feb 14

The weather is the understatement for the week and probably more to come by the look of it. Interesting enough there have been plenty of 7-10kg Spanish mackerel taken from the Gneering Shoal and both the Inner & Outer areas. Putting the pick down around Murphy's Reef and letting out some live baits under a balloon will also reward you with some quality mackerel or a tuna. Remember to set a berley trail out and stick around for at least an hour and a half before deciding to move or change tactics. Obviously if the birds are working then there are surface feeders around so setting up some floaters is a great idea. On the other front trolling can be a successful option with a spread of shallow and deep diving magnums.

Mahi Mahi are around the markers sharing it with plenty of big cobia this season so venture out to the wrecks or head down around Caloundra and fish the channel markers for best results. Parrot, pearl perch and snapper are still in the deeper water areas of Wide Caloundra and the Barwon Banks and we are talking about 90m plus here. Big kingfish are on the known pinnacles and a few amberjack are still stealing your smaller pearl perch on the way to the boat. Pilchards and squid are nailing them at the moment along with jigs if you like to keep fit.

The estuaries have been quiet with an odd quality catch here and there. A big barramundi was caught this week under the Pelican Water bridge and as I have told you before there are some monster fish that get in around there to feed on herring and pike. Bream around Gemini Pontoon and the Coastguard area with whiting being caught around the flats along Happy Valley and Bells Creek channel. Mangrove Jack are a little harder to get after rain but persistence is the key. Currimundi lake is really slow at the moment ut it is always a good spot to take the kids. Hopefully we can get some good weather soon. Have Fun!
