Weekly Report 9 May 14

Some strong southerlies coming in soon so it may be difficult to get out offshore later next week but this week has allowed for a few near calm days on the water which we enjoyed. The fishing was not explosive but we got enough to make it worth the time on the water. Pilchards and fresh squid are nailing the majority of the fish and by using a floating bait you will increase your chances of picking up a good sized snapper. Mowong have been plentiful and when they reach around the 4kg mark they sure put up a terrific fight. Sadly you believe you have a much better fish than the one that's on but that's another story.

The estuaries are suffering from change over, or the transitional phase of fishing as one species takes over from a seasonal variety. The bream are still around in good numbers but it will be around 6 weeks before we start to see the thumpers come on in any numbers. The bait schools of herring have really come on strong in the past week with good amounts of them being caught and used for live bait. The smaller herring are the best to use for the bream whilst the bigger ones will always entice a tailor, flathead or possibly a mulloway.

Look to the estuaries this week to enjoy some fishing and give yourself another couple of weeks to prepare for the snapper in the closer reefs like Murphy's and the 12 mile at Caloundra. If it is ok in close then head to Currimundi or Brays Rock for a chance of some close snapper.
