Weekly Report 16 May 14

Strong winds are hampering efforts around the coast at the moment so offshore action is limited. There are however good snapper and tuskfish around the reefs both in close and out wide. The pearl perch are biting but bigger fish are hard to find right now. As they come on there numbers will increase along with the size of the fish. Still some tuna schools breaking the surface out there but for me its snapper. Pilchards on float lines or paternoster rigs are the best option along with berley. Please don't under estimate the importance of berley throughout the winter period.

The estuaries both in Mooloolaba and Caloundra have a stack of smaller bream around the jetties and estuaries and chopper tailor hunting in schools. A few trevally are being taken around the Pelican Waters canals and smaller soapy jew or mulloway juveniles are being caught in the channel areas of the passage and around the cod hole. They are called soapy jew because when they are smaller that's the way they taste but mainly because the slimy outer layer on them resembles soap. Fishing into the evening is the best time to target big mulloway both in the estuaries and on the beaches. Big king prawns are super bait or a hook full of wriggly blood worms will do the trick.

Looking ahead the winds will slow over the coming days and may offer the opportunity to get offshore but the estuaries are the place to enjoy with the family with tailor, mulloway and big bream on offer to those that are prepared to fish. Have Fun!

Cod Hole would be a great early morning or late evening spot. Much better than around at the Bli Bli bridge.
