River and Reef Species on the Bite

For the offshore anglers, most of the action has been happening out wide of the banks with a mixed array of species from cobia, pearl perch, parrot and the odd freight train amberjack! There’s also been a few good quality snapper being caught in the same areas at around the 5-6kg mark. Most of the better size fish are being caught on small 4” grub style soft plastics rigged with 1/2oz jig heads. Anglers are getting good success by dropping them down and letting the action of the plastic do all the work, and for any more info about soft plastics fishing offshore, drop by and we’ll run you through different techniques.

The beaches are still fishing great with the coffee rock area out the front of Stumers Creek yielding some thumper sea bream up to 40cm! To fish for these clean, silver sea bream, low light periods are the best as they can sometimes be very finicky. Try using small pilchards or a strip of mullet fillet rigged on a set of gangs to tempt these bigger models. The Pincushion rocks area has been fishing well for the bigger specimens, with early morning tides being the preferred option for most anglers .Tailor fishing should start to pick up, with anglers already getting stuck into some better numbers during the night time hours. Try fishing along the gutters that stretch from the Maroochy River mouth down to the Northern end of Mudjimba beach.

Further up river there have been some cracker lizards being caught on both bait and soft plastics. Around the Bli-Bli islands has been fishing great for some quality trevally on prawn profile soft plastics, with the Zerek live shrimp being a standout.

Justin caught this 55cm GT on a Zman MinnowZ Pinfish just past Coolum Creek on the Maroochy River.
