Report 25/08/14

Muddies on the move!

It’s good to see some decent rain finally falling around the “sunny coast.” However, with all that rain around it doesn’t take long for the river to rise up over the bank and take small debris like tree branches, logs and other matter back into the system, so remember be careful and keep a watchful eye at all times when heading in the boat after a fair downpour. All that aside, it’s time to check over the crab pots, and get back them back into the water, with nice sized legal bucks being caught upriver along the stretch from Bli-Bli bridge to Coolum Creek. the muddies have been taking a liking to fresh and frozen mullet, especially if you cut a few slits in them to really get that mullet smell into the water.

After and during rain you can expect a few jacks to be out and on the move, and some good areas to try would be the deeper sections of the river. The salinity in the deeper parts of the river is much higher, and the jacks gather in these areas particularly during the night time hours. When conditions are like this, lure fishing for them can become slightly easier as the jacks are more concentrated in these deeper areas. Slow moving lures such as prawn style soft plastics are one of your best bets in this situation, as jacks are ambush feeders and can easily sneak up on them.

On the beaches there’s been good reports of whiting and bream around the Northshore area with a few small scattered gutters producing the goods. When chasing whiting it pays to have a secondary rod out with either big strip bait or whole squid as the odd mulloway might be lurking. Reasonable size tailor schools have been reported around the Coolum area with an average size of around 1-2kg.

Offshore has been very quiet, with a hopeful break in the weather on its way.
