The Maroochy River Fishing Well!

With the weather around the Sunshine Coast being the best we’ve seen it for a while now, it’s time again to get the boats back out from under cover and get outdoors! Offshore, there have been some good reports of tuna (longtail and Macks) hanging around in close behind the breakers just around the river mouth. One of the best techniques we’ve found when chasing them is to use small soft plastics that resemble whitebait and cast them around the schools and allow the lure to sink down through before retrieving. On the in-close areas, Arkwright schoal has been fishing well for small squire on first light with pillies being the bait of choice. Coolum has also been fishing well for squire with the added bonus of maori cod and sweetlip. Out further rat kings have been reported off the “blinker” and are responding well to micro jigs and 4” size soft plastics. The Banks is also firing and is turning it on with solid catches of snapper, cobia, tuskies, parrot and pearlies.

On the beaches with the big swell around over the last week, the sand has been shifted all over the beachfront filling in most of the gutters along the front. However, gutters are starting to reform around Northshore Beach and beaches further north so these could be worth a look if you’re in the area. There have also been good reports of whiting being caught throughout the day with anglers getting great success on the Black Magic whiting snatchers, and also the soft plastic worms.

In the river, the mouth has been firing for big bream in the early mornings with the added bonus of flathead and trevally. Up around the motorway bridge has been producing good size school jew with anglers get best results on soft vibe lures. The creek mouths are definitely worth a shot for a flathead or three; try fishing them on the start of the run out tide.
