The River a Haven for Anglers in the Wind

The Maroochy River has been the place to be with the windy conditions around. Up the top end of the river there’s been some great bass and jacks around taking a strong liking to surface walkers. Back down towards Coolum Creek trevally schools have been abundant in the early mornings and late afternoon periods with 3” size plastics working a treat. Mud crabs and sandies have been on the move with the prospect of a bit of rain to really get them walking. The Bli-Bli stretch has been fishing well for quality flathead, bream and whiting with cured worms, pillies and mullet strips being the baits of choice. Back up around the mouth, late afternoon and into the night can see you hooking into some thumper whiting with nippers being the gun bait. Pincushion rocks have been holding some cracker bream with mullet gut and mullet strips attracting the attention of the bigger models.

With the wind picking up later in the days an early morning fish down the beach can pay off. Bream , dart and whiting have been the mainstays of the beach but the tailor are really starting to make an appearance, as these fish make there southern migration after spawning on the Frazer coast they tend to feed up on baitfish along the coastline to put on more condition. The good old pilchard is a favored bait, when the fish are thick give the Halco Twistys a go, these lures come in two colors (silver and gold) and a range of sizes.

Offshore there’s been plenty of cobia around Murphys reef and the blinker with floated pillies doing the damage. In close Coolum has been fishing alright for squire and sweetlip while out wide of the banks has been firing. For any further info on what’s working and where simply drop by the shop.
