Report 11/12/14

Trevally, on the bite with the big tides!
The Maroochy River has come alive with trevally over the past week, with the bigger tides really getting them fired up. One spot that has been producing the goods is the Twin Waters Weir. The Weir fishes its best as the tide rises up and floods over the wall. Anglers have been getting success on an array of surface lures with one standout being the Fish Candy Skinny Dog Surface walker, with it ultra-life like walking action across the top designed to look and mimic a fleeing prawn the trevs find them irresistible. Live bait is also a good option with plenty of herring schooling around the weir. The Motor Way Bridge has been fishing well both early in the morning before sun up for jew and trevally and after dark for good size bream and jacks, persistence is the key when fishing around the bridge.
On the beach flathead and whiting are still being caught on the run in tide along both Marcoola and Northshore beaches with worms and pipis being the go to bait. Soft plastics are also a good alternative to try when targeting your bread and butter species along the beach. The gutters along Northshore beach have been producing the odd good size mulloway on mullet strips and bonito.
Well for the offshore anglers the windy conditions just won’t let up, with the rare break in the weather an early morning run in-close can pay off with good sweetlip, squire and the odd mackerel coming from Coolum. The outer Gneerings and the banks will be worth a try with more wet weather predicted the fish will go in search for the cleaner water.
