Report 15/1/15

The Upper Reaches of the Maroochy is the Place to Be!

The top reaches of the river around Coolum creek to Dunethin has been fishing well over the past week for trevally, flathead and bream. With the odd jack and jewfish present on the low light periods, try using fresh mullet strips light weighted into some snags or deeper holes. Jewfish have been responding well to soft vibe lures like the River 2 Sea Fish Candy’s, slowly worked across the bottom. Trolling lures across the bottom along Bli-Bli Islands can pay off with some thumper flathead reported in the area, pinks and others vibrant colours are on their menu. Mud crabs are still moving around through the system with good bucks up Petrie and Eudlo Creeks. The Motorway Bridge is worth a go late at night a heap of bait gathering around, sure to bring in the bigger predatory fish.
On the beaches, dart have been in plague proportions along the majority of gutters from Northshore beach to Marcoola. Whiting have also been in good numbers with the run in tide really getting them on the bite. Red tubing is great for beach fishing as it makes the piece of worm look longer then what it is. Therefore slowing down the rate of use. Jewfish and tailor have been caught at the River Mouth on pillies and a strip of bonito fillet.
Offshore the past week has proven difficult for most anglers to make a run outside. But if given the chance there are good reports of spotted and spanish mackerel coming for the Gneerings and around the blinker. Out Wider the bottom end of the Banks has been fishing well for snapper, parrot, quality Spanish and dolphin fish. For any more info on what’s working and where just drop on by and have a chat.

Narelle Raeburn nailed this stonker of a dolphin fish (mahimahi) from Caloundra Wide. The fish went a whopping 120cm!
