Maroochy River is Red Hot!

In the river with the hotter humid days over the past week, it quiet safe to say we’ve seen a fair few jacks pulled out of the Maroochy River. The upper reaches is where you want to concentrate most of your time with jacks preferring to come out of the structure to gorge themselves on the passing bait or lures. Lightly weighted strip baits are another good option for jack. Trevally have also been on the bite upriver with 3-4” size soft plastics like the squidgy whipbaits getting them on the chew. Whiting have been caught in good numbers around chambers flats with the run in tide being the better of the two. Surface poppers and cured worms are on their menu. The River mouth and Cod Hole have been producing some thumper flathead and small school jew on the change of the tides.
On the beach whiting are very much still on a hot bite, with most fish coming from the gutters along Marcoola and Northshore beaches. Live worms if you can pull them or cured worms are the go. Soft plastics with heavy weighted jig heads are also worth a try along the gutters with some good sized flathead falling victim.
With the weather improving over the past week, anglers haven’t certainly been making the most of the conditions outside. If your chasing Pelagics try heading to the outer Gnerring, there has been good bait activity there, and where there is bait there is fish. Small slug in a range of sizes and weights has been the go, give the Halco Twistys a go, these leave a great bubble trail and look very much like a fleeing bait fish. On the bottom there have been some nice size sweetlip coming from the northern reefs, give Hancock Sholes a go as well as Coolum Reef. Another great table fish from those same reefs is the coral trout, to be real successful with trout, fish hard to the bottom so forget the paternoster rig and fish a running sinker, make sure the drag is locked up tight ready for the strike. You will do a bit of gear but the success will far outweigh the losses.
