Report 29/1/15

Rain and big tides turning the fish on!

With the recent rain around the Sunshine Coast paired with big tides it’s sure to give the river a good shake up. Crabs can be a high priority amongst almost all anglers with the majority choosing to set their pots upriver, however the bigger bucks will be on the move downriver and tend to stay in the deeper holes where there is better salinity levels. Apart from that grunter bream, flathead and jew have been reported around the Bli Bli islands with the fish responding well to live baits. Jacks are still on the go with night sessions bringing out the bigger fish, try focusing your time around creek mouths as they will be holding a lot of bait. Prawns are the ultimate live bait and are being reported throughout the system. Try throwing your cast net around the northern banks of the Motorway Bridge.
On the beaches the stretch along Northshore beachfront has been holding some cracker size flathead with soft plastics and whitebait doing the damage. Squidgy Whipbait soft plastics in the 100mm size are perfectly matched on a 3/8th 4/0 TT jig head. Covering ground is also the key to targeting flathead try to spend around fifteen minutes in each gutter then move to the next. Jewfish are still active at night with the gutters up towards the River mouth likely to hold a couple.
Offshore the inner reefs is where you want to be fishing, with the bigger tides sure to push baitfish out of the mouth and onto the close ground. You should see squire, sweetlip, maori cod as well as other reef species. If you’re chasing Pelagics try out the wider grounds in particular the northern side of the banks with the fish sitting in the cleaner water.
