Report 26/2/15

Rain giving the system a good cleanout!

With the heavy rain falling over the coast, paired with the king high tides and a big swell it’s sure to give the sunshine coast systems a much needed clean out. Crabbing after the rain can certainly pay off with the majority on “the move” in search of salt pockets held up in the deeper holes. Try placing your pots around the creek mouths and drains, be sure to spread your pots out to cover more ground in search of crab. Jacks will fire after the rain with baitfish and prawns coming out of the upper reaches, making their way downstream with the tides. After rain a cast net comes into its own with the creek mouths holding a vast array of baitfish. One of my favourite lures for jack would be the fish candy paddle vibe, this soft vibe lure comes armed with extra tough decoy trebles. The mouth is also one such spot you would want to try, make sure to fish the change of the tides as the current can flow very fast through the channel.
Offshore if we manage to get a break in the weather, the in close reefs are where you want to go, with all the nutrients flooding onto the reefs with the run out tides. Sweetlip, squire, trout and a variety of other reef dwellers should be gathering up on Coolum Reef and Arkwright Shoals. If your after pelagics try fishing the cleaner water out of Caloundra 12mile, or the northern end of the banks.
With the weather the way it was last weekend the Davo’s Tackle World Noosa social fishing competition was postponed to this weekend!
