Report 5/3/15

The Perfect Weekend for Fishing!

With the weather fining up late last week, anglers certainly made the most of every opportunity to get out on the water. In the river the upper reaches have been fishing well for jack with the fish tending to come on the bite on sundown. Still worth popping in a few crab pots with some good muddies getting taken around the Bli-Bli Islands. Trevally, bream and flathead have been active along Goddfreys walls with reported quality fish over 50cm. The Motorway Bridge has been quit productive with anglers looking to put in the time. A night fish on the evening tide has been the go. With the dirtier water around at the moment the whiting around Chamber Island have been plentiful, there have been good bream along the river edges near Twin Waters, small prawn style soft plastics have been the go with the new Squidgie Prawn in the 65mm a real winner.
Offshore the fishing has also been on the improve with most good catches coming from the closer reefs, sweetlip, snapper and coral trout have been plentiful with the Gneerings and the Coolum Reefs all producing. If you are chasing the big pelagics the clean water line will be where you have to focus you efforts, as the water clears we will see an influx of pelagics as they feed on baitfish flushed out of the rivers.
On the beach things are defiantly firing as well, with some nice gutters forming after the rough weather we have had in the past couple of weeks. All the usual suspects are there, whiting, bream, and dart, but with the exposed coffee rock we are seeing the odd reef species in the mix with snapper and sweet lip accounted for on the bigger tides.
