Report 5/3/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Mar 05, 2015 12:01 pm

With all of this fresh water about the word was to give it go but be mindful that there is plenty of fresh water around. Well that was an understatement. The fishing has ran hot from last thursday through and it doesn't look like it is slowing down anytime soon. There have been marlin inside the Gneerings, big Snapper out Caloundra Wide. It is really running hot. The previous weekend was a corker. This weekend will be even better.

From the river to the reef plenty have been caught. A lot of mangrove jack up the dirty end of the Mooloolah River and near the weir caught on soft plastics, live herring or mullet and mullet strips. The mouth of the river and the rocky headland has produced some small squire, bream, flathead, dart and whiting. Prawns, small pilly's with squid, and live beach worms all have came up trumps.

The beach is much the same with live beach worms and prawns the number one bait selection. Big Dart are coming in with flathead, bream and whiting also a great catch.

If you are heading out to the reefs and shoals the best rig that has worked this weekend is running a float rig with 2 x 6/0 Octopus Circle Gamakatsu hooks snelled with half a pilly and full squid sent to the bottom.

Murphey's has been the popular destination, though take nothing away from any of the other fishing grounds. Nice snapper and reefies have been caught inside the Gneerings with 12 mile and beyond still favoured for the Mackerel. Jumbo Pilly slow trolled with weight has been very successful the last few months. You don't have to travel far for great quality grassies either. Plenty have been caught as little as 100m from the lighthouse. Great table fish and there are alot out there in most locations.
