New moon and big tides, get fish biting!

You guessed it, with the new moon early in the week paired with big tides, all points to one thing good fishing! Another thing that happens around the new moon is the local prawn population comes to life, nothing beats a live prawn for every fish in the river. Finding prawns; the best way I’ve found is to cruise the banks with a spotlight, once you see a fair patch flicking then it’s time to get the cast net out. Cast net choice is paramount when chasing prawns a “top pocket” net around 9” is ideal, however you can still get prawns in a drag net and bait fish trap as well. Jacks have been on the bite after dark with the warm nights, one small point that is crucial when chasing jacks is stealth, so once you’ve found your spot “place” the anchor over as quiet as possible and limit the amount of light coming from your boat, it can make all the difference. Whiting have been in good numbers around Chambers Island flats with Fish Candy Skinny Dogs proving to be the gun lure.
On the beaches; a few jew have been taken from the gutters along Northshore with the darker nights, with big local squid working well. Tailor are making an appearance around pincushion and Coolum beach. Sea bream are also starting to show in the gutters with fresh mullet and worms claiming a few.
Offshore; conditions weren’t the best last week, with only a small chance for a large vessel to make a run out, for those that did were rewarded, with good quality squire and sweetlip coming from in-close. Pelagics are still going strong out wider, with the water cleaning up enough to bring them back in. Tuna schools have also been working along the coastline with good numbers spotted around Old Woman Island.
