Report 9/4/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Apr 09, 2015 1:12 pm

The Rains is not all bad news for Anglers!

With the constant rain falling around the coast it’s sure to give to river system a good shake up! Reports are good sized buck mud crabs are on the move with areas such as Bli-Bli Islands and, Petrie creek being the standout spots to throw your pots, also few reports of sand crab coming from down around the River Mouth. Small chopper tailor are making a good appearance in the river with the mouth and also the around the motorway bridge fishing well. Fishing the Run in tide along the Black Banks stretch has paid dividends over the past week with nice size flathead, trevally, bream and whiting feeding on worms, nippers and prawns. Land based soft plastic fishing along the Northshore stretch from the Novatel drain towards the River Mouth has been very productive over the past week with flathead coming in up to 80+cm, Squidgy Whipbaits in the 100mm Dropbear colour have been working well.
On the beaches, dart have been thick right up and down the coastline. Whiting have been in good numbers along Northshore beach with the fish coming onto the bite during the start of the run in tide. Sea bream are starting to show, with Pincushion Rocks well worth a go. Tailor have been taken along Peregian Beach at night with bonito fillets and pillies doing the damage.
Offshore; the wind, swell and rain over the past week prevented most angler from making a run outside last week. But as the wind and swell dropped on Easter Sunday and Monday we saw the in close grounds firing again after the rain. The Gneerings, Hancock Shoals and Old Woman Island are worth a try for sweetlip and other reefies. Cobia and small kingfish are starting to show up around the blinker, with micro jigs and plastics claiming their fair share. Slow trolling baits like garfish, sauris, bonito and xxl pilchards have accounted for some good Spanish mackerel. If you’re anchored up a good berley trail will help keep the fish around the boat, floating pillies and livies on stinger rigs are the go. A few clued on anglers have also been using Head Start rigs to troll garfish for the pelagics, these are a weighted plastic bib system that will allow you to troll a garfish/yakka up to 6 knots. They can be used with a downrigger if the fish are down deeper; or as is if the fish are higher up in the water column, a surface runner rig is also available.
