Report 16/4/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Apr 16, 2015 1:46 pm

River starting to clear after rain!

With the run in tide starting to bring the cleaner water into the river, paired with the cooler mornings we should see sea bream start to come onto the bite. The River Mouth and along the Black Banks stretch is where you want to focus your time, with the best baits being mullet gut and small pillies. Flathead and whiting have been thick around chambers and Goat Island with live nippers and worms claiming their fair share of fish. Surface fishing for whiting can be very successful once you’ve got the action down pat. River 2 seas Fish Candy Skinny Dog lure is working well, with a light shake of the rod tip to get lure to “walk” along the surface. The mouth of Petrie and Eudlo Creek have been fishing well for bream, trevally, flathead and the odd queenfish. Mud crabs have been on the move with the deeper holes around Coolum Creek holding some good bucks.
On the beaches; Marcoola beach has been fishing well for the last two weeks for bream, flathead up to 80cm, dart and whiting. Fishing the run in tide is the best with most of the bread and butter species coming right in close to shore. The gutters along Northshore beach have played host to Sweetlip, squire and the odd jewfish of the night.
On the offshore scene; In close Arkwright Shoal and the Inner Gneerings is fishing very well for sweetlip, tuskies odd legal redthroat, and small squire. With the dirtier water in-close small whaler sharks are prevalent right across the reefs. Micro jigs are proving very successful in-close with a variety of fish taking a slow worked jig Out wider the banks is holding nice size spainyards, dolphin fish, with the added bonus of cobia.
