Report 23/4/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Apr 23, 2015 2:09 pm

Fishing right up and down the coast has been nothing short of sensational, with the crisper cooler mornings starting to bring different species onto the chew. Tailor have been one such species that are making an appearance in the river and along the beach. When chasing tailor along the beachfront look for the deepest possible gutter as there more likely to hold fish, the next is your rig, a set of 5/0 ganged hooks with a large pillie or bonito fillet is perfect. Jew have also been on the bite after dark with the majority of reports coming from the beaches north of Coolum. Sea bream, flathead, and whiting are taking a strong liking to worms, and small pillies on the run in tide on Northshore beach.
In the River, the mouth is fishing well for all bread and butter species with some good golden trevally in the mix. Soft plastics fishing has been seeing some thumper size flathead pulled from the area. An early morning fish under the Motorway Bridge can see you hooking into some cracker trevally with the odd big to boot. Land based Godfreys wall has played home to whiting, bream, flathead and the some nice size jacks, while further up the run in tide around Bli-Bli Bridge has been producing similar catches.
Offshore; the reef fishing out the front has been on fire, that’s if you can get out. With the wind and swell really making things difficult for most to make a run outside. Early morning in close around the Gneerings is the area for good size sweetlip, squire, tuskies and the added bonus of cobia. Schools of tuna have been hitting schools of small baitfish up and down the coast” match the hatch” so small slugs and micro jigs should see you hook up.
