For the offshore crew, reef fish have been very popular targets of late. One particular reef that has been fishing extremely well lately is Murphys Reef. With depths ranging from around 18m – 25m, it’s the perfect place to target a few snapper and sweet lip. When fishing this area, try flicking around a soft plastic lure nice and close to the bottom as soft plastics tend to draw the bigger fish from the schools. Another thing to remember when chasing reef fish on soft plastics it all about the presentation, try and use the lightest weight jig head possibly for the conditions. Longtail and mac tuna have been in great numbers in-close over the past couple of weeks with good schools showing up around Old Woman Island.
The beach has also been fishing well with the gutters along North shore beach producing good numbers of tailor, dart, tarwhine and sea bream. Fish around the tide changes for best results concentrate your time fishing the rising tide. Another great way to improve your catches on the beach is adding various attractors to your rigs, such as glow beads and flasher rigs. On the beach, every little bit helps as there is so much water between fish that getting the fish to find your bait is half the battle! If you’re after more information about fishing the beach, or any location for that matter, drop into Davo’s and the friendly team will talk your through it!
In the river the River Mouth has been holding nice size sea bream, trevally and tarwhine with a variety of baits working, the standout being half pilchards. Trevally are coming back onto the bite inside Twin Waters with the fish responding well to live baits and soft plastics. Keitech Easy Shiners in both the 3” and 4” sizes have been working well. Upriver the stretch from Coolum Creek to Dunethin Rock has been fishing well for school size jew, slow hopped Fish Candy vibes have been claiming their fair share.
