Report 15/5/15

River is starting to clear after the Rain!

Wow what a display of weather we’ve had over the past couple of week, with the powerful wind gusts paired with heavy downpours sending the coasts fishing hub into lockdown. However with the full moon, the big tides have already made a good start on cleaning up the river system. When fishing the river after getting a heap of rain try and concentrate your time fishing the run in tide, most fish will hang in the cleaner water and move upriver with the tide. However you can still pull good fish out of the deeper holes with salt pockets down deep holding a variety of fish. Cotton Tree and Black Banks stretch has been holding good numbers of bream with the case of the oilier the bait the better, soft plastics can be really effective after rain with often the brighter (UV) coloured lures getting results. Zman Minnowz and Zman Grubz are working well with the added touch of Pro Cure making all the difference. Look for those deeper sections with the code hole being one of the better known areas. Fish your bait and lures close to the bottom and you should see good flathead, bream and the odd jack. Soft plastics like the new Squidgy Prawn and the Keitech Easy Shiner have been working well with the more sparkly colours producing the most fish. Trevally have also been in the mix right at the top of the tide, with the Motorway Bridge and the entrance to Twin Waters seeing some nice fish.
On the beaches the new moon has stirred up a few fish, with reports of jew coming from the beaches. Dart, tarwhine and larger winter bream have been in good numbers with the stretch from Pincushion Island up to Yaroomba fishing well, out the front of Stumers creek has fished well for tailor and the odd reef fish.
Offshore; the in-close reefs are on fire with sweetlip and small squire, the Inner Gneerings is worth a go early morning or after dark, remember burley is the key .Now that the swell has dropped a trip to the Banks is on the cards, Big snapper are starting to come on the bit, with the northern end fishing well.

The intriguingly named Craig Mullet caught this nice grunter bream recently.
