Report 22/5/15

River fishing heating up as the weather cools!

In the River, the Mouth has been the top spot for variety over the past week, with everything from bream, tarwhine, trevally, chopper tailor, whiting and flathead coming onto the bite throughout on the run in tide, not to mention reasonable size school jew in the area as well. Live baits have been the definite standout, the best rig for live baits has to be the double snelled rig with two 3/0 Mustard Penetrator hooks with a very light weight sinker, allowing the bait to move around freely. Big flathead have also been common in around the mouth with larger 4-5” soft plastics picking up a few. Land-based, bream, trevally and flathead have been in good numbers of Picnic Point and off Godfreys wall. Further upriver jewfish and the odd jack are being landed out the front of Coolum Creek and the deeper holes up towards Dunethin Rock.
On the beaches, Coolum beach has been a hot spot over the past week for sea bream, tarwhine and dart with fish getting caught up to and over 40cm. chopper tailor are starting to come in along the gutters around Northshore beach with bonito fillets, and large pillies working best. Night fishing can pay off with legal size jew hanging around the River Mouth.
The conditions early last week were fantastic for the offshore crew, with hardly any swell stopping anglers making a trip out, tuna have been travelling in massive schools along the coastline with good patches showing up in front of the Maroochy River Mouth and off Old Woman Island, Micro jigs like the Palms Slow Blatt are a good option. If the fish are schooled up metal slugs like the River2sea Sea Rocks are also a favourites. Longtail, yellowfin and mack tuna are all in the mix. Soft plastics floating pillies, trolled lures and micro jigs have also been working well in close around Arkwright Shoals, and the Inner Gneerings where there have been good quality sweetlip and squire.
