Report 5/6/15

Coast making the most of the good weather!
With the weather fining up and the swell dropping out the offshore crew certainly made the most of the great conditions outside. The in close ground is fishing well with the broken up ground surrounding Old Woman Island producing squire, sweetlip, jew and tailor. Burley is the key! Left-over bait from previous trips like pillies are ideal. Light leader is also required 20-30lb fluorocarbon is all that is needed when fishing in close. Soft plastics have been working exceptionally well for squire and sweetlip in close in particular Zman 5” Scented Jerk ShadZ rigged with a 1oz 5/0 Nitro jig head cast far behind the back and slow hopped on the retrieve. Snapper to 3kg have started to make an appearance on the Outer Gneerings with floated pillies being the most successful way target them.
On the beaches; Whiting, dart, tarwhine and sea bream are coming through the gutters along Northshore beach with cured worms, small pillies and mullet gut working well. Jew are also in the area with whole mullet strips and worms tempting a few after dark. Chopper tailor are coming through the gutters along the coast with reports coming from down south all pointing towards a good season.
In the river; the mouth has been the spot to fish for good size bream with the start of the run in tide best, mullet gut and livies have been the go to bait for most anglers. Whiting are still getting caught in good numbers with the flats surrounding Chambers Island holding some big models. Surface lure fishing with poppers or walkers is a great method to nab a couple. Upriver the deeper holes around Coolum Creek have played host to some reasonable size jew and the odd jack.
