Report 18/6/15

Post by subeditor » Thu Jun 18, 2015 12:11 pm

Wet and windy conditions keeps offshore anglers fishing the Rivers!

With the wind and rain still lingering around the coast, anglers have put the covers over the boats to await better weather. Nonetheless the river has been fishing very well with the Mouth firing for good sized fish on the top of the tide. With the bigger evening tides as we head to the new moon we should schools of tailor and trevally move into the river. If we get a break in the weather the river mouth should be worth a try with pillies on ganged hooks or Halco Twisty’s on a fast retrieve. Around black banks should see quality bream with some good sized fish amongst them, the bream are spawning at the moment so think twice about keeping the larger ones as these are the breading stock. A little further upriver the flats around Chambers Island has been producing good size flathead, with 4” size soft plastics in darker colours claiming their share. Early morning Micro Jigging around the Motorway Bridge can pay off with trevally holding up in good size schools. School Jew have been actively feeding just passed Bli-Bli Bridge. In the deeper holes up past Coolum Creek we have seen some nice jew on the sounder, with soft vibes like, Jackall Transams and River 2 Sea Fish Candys both working well. When fishing for jew done forget your minimum size limit of 75cm and a bag limit of two.
The conditions certainly weren’t favourable amongst beach and offshore anglers this past week, with a very mild 10-15knot average with gusts reaching up to 25knots. For the hearty angler, flathead have been prevalent in the gutters along Marcoola Beach, along with dart, tarwhine and bream. Tailor schools have been reported along the Peregian Beach area with some good fish coming in after dark. Offshore with the wind and swell forecast isn’t looking likely to back off for at least another week.
