Report 31/8/15

Fishing inside the Maroochy River has been quiet tough over the past week, with only the odd standout capture. Jacks have started to come back onto the bite; as the days get warmer it should start to bring up the water temp up with it. We saw some good catches of mangrove jack over the past week with scattered showers coming through in the afternoons. Big jacks were reported to be on the bite up river around Dunethin Rock and Coolum Creek, with Live Baits and Mullet Strips working the best. After dark there have been some cracker catches of flathead with the mouth of both Petrie and Eudlo Creeks producing good size fish. (Lure fisho’s will be pleased to know we have just received a big supply of Ecogear lures covering everything from smaller hard bodies to bigger size plastics. With the shop having doubled in size we’ll continue to see a rise in new gear.)

On the beaches: good size whiting, bream and dart have been caught in the late evening along Northshore beach with the fish responding well to peeled prawns. The odd jewfish has been caught after dark after the full moon with the gutters around Coolum producing quality fish. Mullet and Bonito strips have been the go to baits.

Offshore: in close has been fishing slow with anglers managing to get there bag of squire. Fishing light lines and floaters has been the most effective way to get a few. Out wider the Banks has been the go to spot with amberjack, parrot, pearlies, cobia, redthroat and good size snapper being caught. Micro jigs can be effective when the bites tough as the action of the jigs trigger the bite. Shimano Colt Snipers and TT Vector jigs have been the standouts.
