Report 23/10/15

The Maroochy River has been running hot with whiting over the past week with plenty of quality fish caught. For the lure anglers whiting have been taking a strong liking to surface walking lures such as Bassday Sugapens and River to Sea Skinny Dogs. Wading the sand flats around Chambers Island and casting over the banks near the Bli-Bli Oyster racks has been the spot to be, fishing the bottom of the tide and the start of the run in is the best time to chase these magnificent fish. As we know where there’s whiting there’s flathead not too far behind. Flathead though prefer a different approach so pop the surface lures back in the tackle box and tie on a 3” size paddle tail soft plastic. Keitech’s 3” Easy Shiners are the perfect flathead soft plastic with realistic colouring and great swimming action these plastics are dynamite on big flathead. The upper reaches of the river has started to turn it on, with good size school jew, flathead and jack on the bite. Getting out early in the morning is the key with fish tending to feed more aggressively as the sun starts to rise.
On the beaches dart have been in plague proportions right along the beachfront along with quality whiting and bream. Northshore Beach has had a few scattered gutters which have been producing fish. Low tide and the start of the run is the key with fish moving up into the shallows to feed. Peeled prawns and cured worms have had the most success.
Offshore; the wind has still been pretty unpredictable, with a few good days during the week to make a run outside. For those that could get out the Inner Gneerings has had decent size squire along with small kingfish. Micro jigs around 20gr size have been claiming their fair share of fish. The bottom end of the Banks has been firing for snapper, amberjack, pearl perch and cobia.
