Nights come alive with fish!

The recent rains helped the Maroochy River out significantly with prawns and other baitfish spreading right throughout the system. Night fishing has really been paying off lately with more and more jacks reportedly caught over the last week. With the warm start predicated for the first week of November we should expect to see the jacks really come onto the bite. Try to focus your effort fishing just before a change in the weather this is when they will be at their most active. In the way of bait fishing, it’s very important to get your rig right firstly. I prefer to run a double snelled hook rig, this rig consists of two 4/0 octopus style hooks although keep in mind that circle hooks work very also. 30lb fluorocarbon leader is perfect along with a length of around 50cm. If you’re not sure on how to tie this rig just drop by the shop and we’ll give you a demonstration. Flathead have been making a strong appearance around the River Mouth and Black Banks stretch with bigger size soft plastics around the 4-5” size working well. Flathead can also be successfully targeted in the surf with Soft Plastics, the one thing to get right is the size and weight of the jig head for the conditions that you’re fishing in. Surface fishing for whiting has proven very successful with some good size fish prowling the flats. It’s very important when chasing whiting on the flats is to fish the tides, the first couple of hours on the run in and the last couple of hours of the run out is usually find works best. Also with the retrieval of the lure is constantly work it with minimal pauses.
On the beaches; jewfish have been active after dark, with mullet and bonito strips working well. during the day there have been plenty of dart and bream on the bite right in amongst the shore breakers, peeled prawns and cured worms rigged on a small longshank baitholder style hook has been doing the damage.
Offshore; with only minimal reports coming from the inner reefs, we saw spotted mackerel, snapper, sweetlip and some cracker kingfish.
