Warmer weather and recent rains has had the fish chewing

The cool nights have come back on after a very hot start to the month, with temperatures getting as cool as 16 degrees during the night, however this hasn’t been enough to stop the jacks from biting. Reports are coming through thick after the recent rain that the jacks are on! Deeper holes from both Petrie and Eulo Creek up to Dunethin rock have been producing good size fish. With many falling victim to the good old live bait, live prawns as we know work best for every predatory fish in the river. As it is at the moment the river is full of school size prawns as well as banana prawns. Cast netting under the cover of darkness is the key with creek mouths and small run off drains being a good place to start your search. Flathead and whiting have been in good numbers off the Chambers Island Flats, drift fishing peeled prawns and white has seen best results. There have been some thumper whiting caught lately on surface lures in particular the 75mm Bassday Sugapen these lures can catch anything in the river! With the unique walk the dog action across the flats whiting along with trevally and tailor can’t resist.
Off the beaches; there has been the odd report of big jew caught in the area over the new moon. Big strip baits have been working best, rigged on two snelled octopus style hooks. Fishing the tides is very important also when chasing jew, try concentrating you’re time fishing the start of the run in tide as this is when the gutters start to fill up with water and bait for jew to move in. whiting, flathead and dart have been thick all along the beaches with the fish sitting right on the shore breakers.
Offshore; in close is starting to fire up with good squire, small kings, sweetlip and moses perch all starting to come on the bite after the recent rain. Fishing early mornings or after dark has been paying off. If the conditions prevail there have been some good fish reported out wide, with the grounds off Caloundra reported to be holding good snapper and a few pelagics.
