Warmer water temps, means the start of the pelagic season!

The Maroochy River is on fire with big whiting, flathead, trevally and jacks all on the bite. Baitfish have been thick in the upper reaches of the river, with it being all too easy to get a bucket load. A seven foot bottom pocket cast net is ideal for beginners. A tip to remember when you’re finished using your cast net; it’s best to add a couple of cap full’s of fabric softener to loosen up all the joins in the net and also help with the rope. If you’re not into cast nets then an early start flicking surface lures should see a result. The upper reaches of Eudlo and Petri Creeks have both been popular with boat anglers as this gets you away from the skiing areas. Jacks are really coming on strong now as the water warms and they become more active, I love working the area’s with good overhanging trees, the fish will sit in the structure under the trees and hit anything that lands on the surface, nothing wakes you up faster than a jack hitting your surface lure first cast of the morning.
On the beaches; whiting, bream, dart and flathead have been in good numbers along the Maroochy Northshore Beach Stretch. The fish are sitting right in the shore breakers, cured worms and peeled prawns are perfect for the whiting while small fish baits like hardy heads and small pilchards work well on the flathead.
Offshore; we had a magic day last Sunday with the wind and swell making things all too easy for the offshore anglers. Out wider dolphin fish along with mackerel and marlin have been reported from the 8 mile right through to the twelve mile. Snapper have gone off the bite with the warmer weather however the all still some good fish reported off the Outer Gneerings and the deeper reefs like Murphys. On the closer Reefs, Coolum Reef, Arkwright Sholes and Handcock Sholes have given up some quality sweetlip, trout and jewies. Micro Jigging is really taking off and the anglers that have mastered the technique are out fishing bait fisherman. To check out the latest in Micro jigging and a chat on how, what and where, call into one of our shops and one of the staff will be more than happy to help.
