Wind slows offshore anglers!

Fishing the rivers have been tough the last few days because of the big southerly winds that have been passing over the coast. This has seen the pelagics like trevally and queenfish feeding aggressively early mornings and late afternoons. Fishing live baits using a snelled rig with two mustad 4/0 penetrators on 20lb trace line. The preferred live baits have been herring, biddy bream and poddy mullet. As the winds eased through the nights a selection of anglers hit the river using soft plastics and soft vibes achieving success with school jew, trevally, jacks and flathead all being the caught species. Whiting have been in good numbers around the river mouth and chambers island flats. Preferred baits like live bass yabbys, beach worms and peeled prawns have been extremely affective. For best results try fishing the run out tide and the start of the run in tide. With the recent afternoon storms the mud crabs have been on the move running right throughout the river. Fresh mullet cut into chunks seems to be getting the most attention. The successful crabbing areas have been the Bli Bli islands, Coolum creek and the upper reaches of the Maroochy River. Remember (MALE) mud crabs must be 15cm across the carapace to keep and the bag limit is 10.
Beach: Anglers who braved the southerly winds managed to get onto some quality bread and butter species like bream, whiting, dart and flathead fishing the deep onshore gutters in the early hours of the morning before the winds pick up.
Offshore: With the strong southerly gusts we have experienced this past week has seen a tough offshore bite with only limited anglers braving the big winds and swell for some reef fish and the odd pelagic. The standout reefs were Sunshine reef, Chardons reef, and Arkwright Shoal which all produced reef fish and beautiful sized coral trout. Live baits and jigs have been working best.
It’s been a great weekend in the shop at Marcoola with the winners of our Shimano Stella Reel and the Shimano Terez rod drawn last Sunday afternoon, Jim Hill from Mudjimba won the Stella reel and young Jayden Bruckner from Twin Waters picked up the Terez Rod. Congratulation guys, I know they will be put to good use!
