Report 16/12/15

Post by subeditor » Wed Dec 16, 2015 11:47 am

Lighter winds last week send anglers offshore in droves!

In the river the upper reaches have been fishing well, with trevally, school jew, jacks and the odd threadfin about. Live bait has been easily available with everything from poddy mullet, herring, silver biddies and bony bream practically boiling on the surface. Fishing with soft plastics around the 4” size is ideal. Lures like Zman 4” Swimmerz and Zerek prawns have been the standouts. With soft plastics fishing make sure your lure is always in contact with the bottom with a couple of small lifts of the rod tip on your retrieve. Flathead and bream have also been in good numbers up river from the Bli-Bli islands to Dunethin Rock, for best results try burleying the area you’re going to fish. There have been some good jacks caught up Petrie Creek with small hardbody lures as well as surface lures working well. Fishing the Chambers Island flats and surrounding areas has been very productive with whiting coming through on the start of the run in tide, worms, nippers and pipis have been the go to bait.
On the beaches; whiting, dart, sand flathead and big bream have been about the local gutters, fishing the low light periods has been seeing good success. There have been an abundance of beach worms as well as pipis all along the coast beaches, perfect baits for whiting and dart. Good jew off the rocks at Yaroomba, with the start of the new moon faze this should only improve. Fishing either side of the tide has also greatly improve the catch rate of beach anglers.
Offshore; there have only been a few good days over the last week to get outside. For those that did the wider ground produced quality fish with everything from, snapper, amberjack, cod, moses perch and hussar out on the banks. There have been some good reports of spotted mackerel coming from the blinker with juvenile kingfish in huge numbers also.
