Report 24/12/15

OFFSHORE: It wasn't the most exciting week as far as the offshore boys were concerned. Thursday through until Saturday were pretty much closed out by fresh to strong south easterlies and a 1.5m to 2.0m swell but the fact was, we still had more fishable days than not. There just wasn't a lot happening as far as the mackerel were concerned and the reef fish were quite often down in numbers and size. Still, those who put in the time usually came back with a feed.
Most of the action was along the middle reef belt this week with no reports at all from out wide. Chardon's Reef tended to run hot and cold with the better days producing gold spot cod, jewfish, venus tusk fish, pearl perch, moses perch and teraglin jewfish. There was also the odd catch and release marlin.
Lochlan Winter from Mount Isa (above) is pictured with a jewfish or mulloway that he boated out there on Tuesday's seven hour Cougar One charter.
North Reef, however, was definitely the better performer. Making the capture list there were; grass sweetlip, moses perch, pearl perch, Maori cod, jewfish, squire, gold spot cod, sea bream, coral trout, goat fish, sail fish (caught and released), frying pan snapper, mowong, painted mowong, spotted mackerel and the odd Spanish mackerel. Matthew Thomas from Brisbane (above) boated his quality Maori cod out there on Monday's seven hour Trekka 2 charter.
And Dan Hawkins from Sydney (above left ) is pictured with a couple of absolute thumper pearl perch from Tuesday morning's five hour Trekka 2 charter.
Wild Thing 2 scheduled a number of trips to North Reef this week. From Sunday's seven hour charter, Ben Jones from Brisbane (above right) claimed this colourful coral trout while Arturo Yap from New South Wales and Josh Clissold from Geelong (below left) made it look easy with their double header spotties.
There weren't many Spaniard captures this week so Glen Dixon from Toowoomba (below) was understandably pleased with the 7kg specimen that he boated on this morning's five hour Wild Thing 2 charter. It went for a pilchard floater. Last but certainly not least, local angler Joel Topliff (above) is pictured with a couple of quality jewfish or mulloway that he boated at North Reef on Wednesday. One went for a live slimey mackerel and the other a whole squid bait.
Closer in, Sunshine Reef was the spot for sweetlip, moses perch, brown line sea perch, spotted mackerel and the odd coral trout. In Laguna Bay, the birds were working sporadically from the river mouth to the Hall's Reef stretch with a few spotted and school mackerel responding to slugs and trolled pilchards.
