Report 22/1/16

Post by subeditor » Fri Jan 22, 2016 9:19 am

Weather on the improve this week!

With the wind and swell dropping out we should still see some good action offshore. Pelagics have been out in good numbers with reports of more spanish mackerel starting to show. Live baits have been the key for spanyards either fished out on a floater or slowly trolled. There have been some big kingfish around the blinker lately with anglers often getting busted off while chasing mackerel. On the inner reefs Coolum Reef has been producing the most reef fish with the morning bite fishing best.
On the beaches; whiting, dart, sand flathead and bream have been caught out the front of the Marcoola Surf Club with some good gutters in the area. The odd tailor and jew have been reported coming from the gutters along Northshore Beach.
In the river; still worth popping in a few crab pots with some good muddies getting taken around the Bli-Bli Islands. Trevally, bream and flathead have been active along Goddfreys walls with reported quality fish over 50cm. The Motorway Bridge has been quite productive with anglers looking to put in the time. With the dirtier water around at the moment the whiting around Chamber Island have been plentiful, there have been good bream along the river edges near Twin Waters, small prawn style soft plastics have been the go with the Squidgie Prawn in the 65mm a real winner. Twin Waters has been fishing well after dark for jacks with unweighted bonito fillets taking the most fish, trevally are taking poppers like the Jackson, with soft plastics in prawn profiles working well after dark on the rising tide. The resident mud crab population in Coolum Creek are on the march after the recent rains, remember to watch size and bag limits as fisheries are active in this area.
Davo's are running a MACKEREL MANIA COMPETITION during January. With the spotted mackerel coming on the bite you'll have the chance to win a $500.00 gift voucher! To be eligible, bring in your best spotted mackerel to be weighed, measured and photographed.
There will be points awarded for length, weight and condition of the catch and bonus points for best smile and best story. The winner will be decided on January 31 and announced as soon as possible after that date. Both Davo's stores (Noosa and Marcoola) will be accepting entries.
