Local angler are bagging out offshore!

Wow! What an awesome run of weather we’ve had over the past week, with the local anglers along with the holiday makers certainly making the most of the good conditions! Offshore it’s almost been like a sheet of glass over the past week with pelagics aplenty right across the coastline, we’ve seen some big bait balls from the beaches with hungry predators like mack tuna, longtail, yellowfin tuna, and both spottie mackerel and spanish hanging not too far out. With small slugs and plastics being the favoured way to target them. Just one thing to remember is when approaching the working schools don’t fly up a hundred miles an hours just cruise upwind turn the motors off and cast ahead or around the schools, making sure to allow your plastic or slug to sink first before retrieving. On the bottom reefies have also been abundant with some nice fish coming from the local reefs, coral trout, jew, slate bream, and some quality snapper have come from the Gneerings, Coolum Reef, Arkwright and Handcock Sholes. Murphys has also fished well with an outstanding wahoo landed from that area.
In the river; the Maroochy River still has a bit of fresh in it with the water clearing up just nicely on the top of the tide. Fish the last couple of hours of the run in has paid off with angler catching a good amount of fish of the flats surrounding Chambers Island, worm baits or live nippers have been working the best. Further upriver the section from Bli-Bli Bridge to the Bli-Bli Islands has been fishing quiet well for flathead and bream with small curl tail plastics doing the damage. The 2.5” Curl tails from the Samaki range have been the go to plastics rigged on a 1/12th 1/0 jig head is a recipe for success. Fishing the Maroochy Waters area has seen some quality mangrove jacks taken over the last week, this is a great time to target them as the bigger fish feed hard to put on condition before heading offshore to spawn. Working structure like pontoons and jetties with live baits like herring and poddy mullet may see you tangling with a 50cm plus fish.
On the beaches; dart, dart and more dart!!! They have been in plague proportions across the whole coast with almost every gutter producing these feisty little fish. Some good models up to high 40’s have been reported coming from the gutters around Coolum Beach. The odd good flathead and bream have also been around try fishing the bottom of the tide and the start of the run in.
