Brilliant weather sends angler offshore!

With the cooler weather last weekend it was a bit difficult to get more that your nose out from under the doona, but with the water temperatures dropping the reef fishing will only improve. Angler made the most of the weather and moon phase and headed to the Barwon Banks for an overnight session. Large snapper, jewies, king fish, large cod, pearl perch and cobia were all accounted for. For those in the smaller craft that are a little happier closer to home, the Gneerings, Murphys and Coolum Reefs were all producing snapper, sweetlip, jew, coral trout, and cod. The good old floater has been very productive, soft plastics like the Zman Scented Jerk Shads teamed with the Berkley elevator heads have also been working well. On the surface tuna and mackerel are still in good numbers and are still in close with small slugs and stick baits working well.

For the river anglers, there is a massive amount of bait fish moving in and out of the Maroochy River on the tide. Fishing earlier in the morning and later in the evening has been the most productive. Quality bream and a flathead have been the mainstay and are right throughout the system. Fishing the last of the run out tide, concentrate your efforts around the drop offs and deeper sections as the bait moves out on the tide should see a result like a big flathead or large winter bream. There are some larger predatory fish in the form of tailor or trevally chasing the herring schools at the moment. A cast net will greatly improve your chances as live bait has be the most productive. For those of you that prefer lures, fast moving soft plastic cast at the bust up or smaller slugs have also been successful.
On the beach the conditions are stunning, still concentrate your efforts in the low light periods. For those hard core jew anglers, now is the time to hit the beach early, with the moon setting at about 3am in the morning and the high tide around the same time the jew should be on the chew. Work those deeper gutters and the rocks around Coolum.
