Weather kept Anger Home last Weekend!

With the weather over the weekend nothing short of atrocious most angler tended to leave the boat on the trailer and work on tending to their tackle. For the brave few that did head out the rivers were there only salvation.
Prior to the weather last weekend, fishing the Maroochy River was great fun with large schools of trevally working right through the lower part of the system feeding on prawns and small baitfish. Along with the trevally were some nice sized tailor and the odd queenfish. It seemed the area downstream from the main traffic bridge was the most productive. Angler fishing from shore were also in the mix with smaller jigs like the Tebo’s from Ecogear pinning some nice fish. Areas like Twin Waters Wear, Picnic Point and the western point of Chambers Island have all produced some quality fish. Upriver fishing the banks between Bli Bli Bridge and Petri Creek has seen some outstanding flathead landed, big females are plentiful and great fun on light gear. Soft plastics have been a proven way of catching them with the brighter colours and heaver jig heads the key. Diving hardbodies have also claimed some nice fish again in bright colours, one of my favourites is the 50mm Tango Shad from Zerek. Winter bream were also in numbers and good fish were landed around the pontoons and jetties along the Maroochy Foreshore.
Offshore again most report came from earlier last week. The Gneerings was fishing well with most anger targeting reef species, a lot of fish were landed with a great deal of them being undersize, this will certainly change over the coming weeks as this weather event pushes cooler currents onto the closer reefs bringing those larger cooler water species onto the closer reefs. Another positive is that a lot of smaller bait fish will move out of the rivers and onto the reefs in search of more saline water providing a great food source for larger reef fish. At the time of writing there are good wind conditions predicted for later this week so I would be giving the Gneerings, Coolum Reef, Arkwright Shoals and Hancock Shoals a close look.
On the beaches, the weekend was a right off with the large swells and strong winds, Again this is a positive as the conditions will scarf out the beaches and create some great gutters. Being a couple of days after the full moon now is a great time to try and target some jewies. With the tide around the later part of the evening, planning a late night fish will be the go. Fresh Mullet worms and local squid are all favourites for jew. Larger tailor and winter bream will also be on the chew.
