A week of Perfect Weather gets Anglers Fishing!

The river has really started to clean up and the bream are in big numbers, areas like Chambers Island, Maroochy Waters and the Bradman Ave have all recorded good catches. Mullet is a great bait filleted and cut into strip baits these feisty little fish can’t seem to get enough of it. For the lure anglers lightly weighted soft plastics has been a real success with the Zman Grubs and the Squidgy prawns both working well. Trevally are also making their way back into the river and have been prolific down towards the mouth. Fast moving slugs Micro Jigs and soft plastics have all claimed fish, for the bait anglers the good old pilchard has been the go to bait as tailor are also on offer in the same area. Upriver the deeper holes have been holding some nice jew with lure angers having the most success. There are a lot of catfish around at the moment and they tend to leave the lures alone preferring bait. Twin waters has also started to fire with trevally, bream and small queenies all taken over the last week. Flathead seem to be holding a little closer to the mouth so concentrate your efforts downstream from the Bli Bli Bridge.
Offshore; the Gneerings we have seen some nice snapper showing up in good numbers, with sweetlip, pearlies, maori cod and the odd coral trout also hitting the decks. Arkwright Sholes is another great option for the smaller craft with squire, sweetlip and cod also on offer. Out on Murphys Reef, snapper, pearl perch, jew large cobia and cod all been taken over the last week. The Barwon Banks has been where the larger craft have been heading when the forecast has been looking favourable. Big knobby snapper, larger pearl perch and monster cobia have been feeding on live baits, fresh strip baits, squid and pilchards fished close to the bottom. A little further south Currimundi Reef has been fishing well of an early morning for sweetlip, redthroat, squire, and the odd cobia. Larger micro jigs and larger soft plastics have accounted for some outstanding reefies over the last couple of weeks with some anglers reporting amazing success. As with bait it is vital that you get your gear to the bottom so make sure you have the correct weighted jig head or micro jig to do so.
Off the beach winter bream are in good number with the morning and afternoon sessions the best, look for those gutters and deeper holes this will be were the fish seem to be holding, Stumers Creek beach up past Coolum has seen some nice tailor as has the mouth of the Maroochy. Fast moving slug and fresh baits have been the main drawcards. There are some goog whiting also coming from the beach with sand worms and yabbies the perfect baits.
Mike Wyeks with a nice feed of tailor.
