Report 29/7/16

Post by subeditor » Fri Jul 29, 2016 11:17 am

Good numbers of flathead coming from the Maroochy River!

With the wind up a little over the weekend a lot of offshore anglers tended to stay on the closer reefs, Old Woman Island was popular and some nice pan sized snapper were taken, sweetlip were also on offer as well as mori cod, cobia and smaller jew. Up towards Coolum the reefs were also producing with snapper and under sized red throat boated. Soft plastics and micro jigs have again been popular with a lot of anglers tending towards the pink colours. Shimano Colt Sniper do a cracker and it comes in a rage of weights up to 55g, there are also two types with the flat fall the most popular. In plastics the Coco Ice has been the favourite it also come in a couple of sizes and shapes. On the surface tuna and mackerel continue to harass bait schools, pilchard floater seem to be the best way to tangle with the pelagics.
In the Maroochy River the water has cleared up nicely and the fishing has really come on, there have been some good trevally taken around the traffic bridges, and twin waters. Flathead have been in good numbers with thev lower parts of the river seeming to produce more fish in saying that a couple of reports have come in from around Bli Bli Islands of some quality fish holding there. Anglers have been getting the flatties on soft plastics and slow trolled diving lures. The Run out tide seems to be the best time to target them as they lay in wait for a passing morsel of food. The Zerek Tango Shad in 50mm size has pinned some nice fish this week. Bream are also in good numbers with deeper areas of the river seem to be holding good fish. Prawns and small mullet strips have been the go too baits as well as small fish baits like white bait and hardy heads have also working well. Up river there has also been some great activity with the odd jack and school jew taken from the deeper holes up toward the cane bridge. Live baits have been the go too with the lure anglers preferring paddle tail vibes.
Out on the beaches; the prevailing offshore breezes and warm weather over the weekend have seen the beach angler out in force. A long cast is the order of the day as there aren’t too many decent gutter at the moment. The fish are there but are cruising just outside the breakers. The evening tide in the bigger tide having just had the full moon, so you will have to up-size your lead in the evening to cope with the swell. Tailor, larger bream, dart and larger flatties are all on offer with the good old pilchard the go to bait.
