Report 12/8/16

The Maroochy River always manages to astound me with the diversity of fish on offer!

The upper reaches of the river have been holding some nice jack, with soft vibes getting the best results. For those targeting jewfish, try fishing the deeper holes in the upper reaches also. Remember to be patient as they are called “silver ghosts” for nothing. Also mix up your approach on the day, try changing from vibes to big paddle tail soft plastics and likes. The mud banks around Bli-Bli Island are continuing to provide anglers with good size flathead. Trolling bright deep diving hardbodies is the best option. Trolling lures is great for covering large areas and can be an effective way of finding schooling fish.
For the offshore crew it was a bit of a will we go or not situation last weekend. The weather reports were all about staying off the water but as the weekend approached the weather seemed to improve dramatically. For those that did manage to get out, the closer reefs where where most boater headed. Old Woman Island has again fish well for smaller snapper, sweetlip and the odd tuna and mackerel. With the water so clear burley is key, and if you can put a burly pot on the bottom you will stand a much better chance of catching better fish. The divers tell me there are some outstanding jew on the closer reefs so if we get a weather window where you can do an overnighter you stand a great chance of bagging one. Large whole baits like mullet and tailor are perfect for the jew. Down on Currimundi Reef squire and sweetlip are in good numbers. Heading out to the Gneerings and Murphys reefs larger snapper, and big cobia are also on the chew. If the predicted weather for this week is right a trip to the Hard or the Barwon banks is well worth it, with big pearlies snapper and cod all on offer.
Noojor Boat ramp; for those that don’t know the development of the new boat ramp has recently been opened to the public at the end of Mudjimba’s Noojor Road. The ramp came at a much needed time for local anglers and was completed 7 weeks ahead of schedule. The features include a two lane boat ramp with floating walkway and rigging and de-rigging bays, 45 car trailer parking spaces, 10 additional car parks, pathways, designated filleting area and more. From the team at Davo’s we want to say thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council for their outstanding job! If you’re unsure on how to get there just drop by the shop, and while you’re at the shop why ask the friendly staff where all the big fish are biting!
