Plenty of flathead in the river!

With some fantastic weather over the weekend angler were out in force on the beach, river and offshore. For those that were on the river the tide was perfect for a night fish, there has been the odd jew taken from the Cod Hole with most fish taken on live bait. Up river flathead are in good numbers with the area around Bli Bli Islands fishing well, the run out tide seems to be the best time and prawns and small fish baits the prime baits. Soft plastics have also claimed some nice fish with brighter colours seeming to get the results. Trevally are again in good numbers in the lower part of the system, fast moving micro jigs and small slugs have been engulfed by these fast moving fish. Tailor are also in the system, they tend to follow bait schools into the river on the incoming tides. Some nice bream are also being claimed with some monster fish taken around the structure in the Cotton Tree area. Whiting have also been about with the odd larger fish to 40cm, try Chambers Island, Black Banks and around the river mouth. Best baits have been freshly pumped yabbies and live sand worms.

For those heading offshore, a trip out wide was on the cards with a lot of angler choosing to do the overnighter on the Friday night. The Barwon Banks were where most angler headed with some nice catches recorded, large snapper, cod, pearl perch, cobia and parrot were all boated. There was a far bit of run so larger baits took a while to get to the bottom. For those using soft plastic most anglers were switching to elevator heads to get there plastics to the bottom. Micro Jigs have also been working well and the new Chilli Padi From Zerek have been really firing , these jigs are made of tungsten they are quite a bit heaver for their size so get to the bottom a lot easier. For those of us that have smaller craft the closer reef were also producing with Coolum Reef, Arkwright Sholes, Handcock Sholes and the Gneerings all producing good fish. Snapper to 70cm, sweetlip, cod and coral trout were all on offer. Fresh baits and burley was the key to good fish.

On the beach, the moderate swell and a bit of breeze made for perfect conditions for beach anglers. The tides last weekend were perfect for an early start and fishing those two hours either side of the high tide. Looking for those gutters is key at the moment, whiting, dart and bream have all come from the gutters. Tailor are also moving through in schools at the moment with the best fish seeming to come at night.
