Mackerel are on the move!

With the weather moving into the spring pattern we are starting to see more and more evening storms. This in turn really gets the mangrove jacks fired up, fishing the upper reaches of the Maroochy River as well as Coolum creek has seen some great results. Casting suspending hardbody lures into snags or using paddle vibe style soft plastic around the rocky outcrops should also see a result. There are still plenty of good quality flathead in the river fishing down river from Bli Bli Island has been the most productive. Whiting numbers and sizes are also improving with Chambers Island, Black banks and Cotton Tree all producing nice fish. Freshly Pumped Yabbies and beach worms have been the gun baits for the elbow slappers with poppers and surface walkers also claiming some great fish. Fishing the mouth at night has been worthwhile and timing this with a high tide has seen some large tailor on the chew. Whole pilchard baits have been the pick of the baits with fresh mullet also claiming some good fish.
On the Offshore seen, anglers have keep pretty close as the wind and weather is a little unpredictable. There have been some great reports of mackerel from down towards Caloundra 5 mile, fishing live floater baits has been the key with a lot of angler also having success with slugs. The New Chilli Padi from Zerek are perfect for the job as they are made of tungsten which gives you better casting weight while still keeping a smaller profile. Good snapper still seem to be around with the deeper reefs holding the larger fish. Murphys Reef and the Barwon Bank have been the best for the larger snapper with pearlies and cobia also in good numbers.
The beaches have also been fishing well for whiting dart and larger tailor. The whiting have been taking a liking to pippies and freshly pulled worms. The dart will pretty much eat anything but prawns and cut pilchard baits have got some good results. The tailor have been mainly at night and have been responding well to fresh mullet strips and whole pilchards on ganged hooks.
Noosa Yachtie Fishing Club are running a Youth fishing Clinic on the Noosa River bank near the river stage, the One hour fishing lesson is $5/child per child and will teach all the basics of fishing. The clinics include all gear and bait plus a show bag as well as a sausage sizzle and drink on completion. Entries are at Davo’s Tackleworld and the clinics are being run on Saturday and Sunday mornings October 22nd and 23rd. There is also a raffle at $1 a ticket with some great prizes on offer including Bunnings Vouchers, Meal vouchers, tackle vouchers as well as meat and seafood vouchers.
