Big Tailor around the River Mouths!

In the Maroochy River the top end of the river has been firing for mangrove jack, angler have been working the deeper drop offs upriver from Coolum Creek. Soft plastics, paddle vibes and hard bodies like the Zerek Tango Shad in the 65mm have all been working well. For those of you that prefer live bait poddy mullet and live prawns have been the go. Jew have also been in the same area with the low light and night time periods producing the quality fish. Coming down river the flathead are still in great numbers with the bigger females still spawning. Fishing slow rolled soft plastics worked over edges and drop offs has resulted in some large fish well over the 75cm mark. The river mouth has been one of the hot spots with some very large tailor feeding on bait fish brought out on the tide. Some rather large tailor have been taken at night with pilchards and live baits working well.
On the offshore seen the wind has again gotten anglers out of bed early as the breezes seem to come in early, most anglers are back in by mid-morning after setting off in the dark. Sunup has been a great fish with schools of spotted mackerel and mac tuna on most of the closer reefs. Casting fast moving slugs and micro jigs has resulted in some good catches. There are some large schools of bait out there at the moment so make sure you have your bait jigging rod ready to go. Yakka’s and slimmys have been perfect bait for a floater and have been picked up by some monster cobia. Trout sweetlip, morwong and squire have come from the Gneerings, Coolum Reef, Arkwright Sholes and Handcock Sholes. The deeper reefs like the Barwon Banks and Murphys have seen bigger snapper, cod and pearl perch kingies and amber jacks.
On the Beaches, the Maroochy North Shore has been a mecca for anglers with the late night high tide and the new moon. Large tailor and jew have been taken from both sides of the Maroochy River mouth. Whiting and dart are in good numbers in the holes and closer gutters. Rock fishing around Coolum and Yaroomba has seen some good tailor and the odd sweetlip coming from the rocks.
