Super Moon Brings on the Fish!

With the super moon earlier last week anglers were out in force, there were some great captures in the river with some great jacks taken. With the big moon we also get large tides and with tides over the two meter mark a lot of bait is brought into the system. Predatory fish like tailor and trevally were all accounted for in good numbers, queenies were also in the mix and gave anglers a run for their money as reels screamed under the pressure. Larger soft plastics also accounted for some nice school jew from the deeper holes. For those that prefer to fish the daylight hours whiting continue to be in good number around Chambers Island, Cotton tree and Black Banks. Worms and freshly pumped yabbies are the gun baits. Flathead are still in great numbers with nice fish taken around Bli Bli Islands, these fish are in the later stages of spawning are really starting to nest up so if you get on to a fish keep working that same area to try an attract big mumma. Crabs are also starting to show up in good numbers, good sized buck have been enticed into the pots by fresh mullet.

On the beach we are still seeing some stonker tailor, fishing at night or just before dawn has seen the best results. Dart are in great numbers and are great fun for the kids, casting into the close gutters with prawns and small strip baits has resulted in some quality fish, yes there are a lot of undersize fish but you do get the odd keeper. Jew are also on the prowl with the best bit time between sun set and moonrise. Large baits like mullet fillet, tailor fillet and bonito fillet have all worked.

The offshore seen has been a little quiet with the constant northerly winds but with a south easterly change and lighter winds last weekend we saw plenty of boats on the water. At this time of the year it is all about pelagics and there are plenty to be had. Keep a close eye out for that bird activity as the best give away as to where the fish are. Mackerel and tuna are in good numbers and if you can get out you should be able to get amongst them without two much trouble. The new Nomad DTX Minnows have just hit the shelves and look fantastic, these lures are self-tuning and can be trolled at up to 12 knots. For those of you working the reefs the trout are also in good numbers, micro jigs work a treat on these tasty table fish. For those in smaller craft fishing the closer reefs there are plenty of squire and sweetlip on offer.
