Report 23/3/17

Good rain fell in certain areas around the coast giving the creeks some well-earned flow the Maroochy River needed. Big whiting thrive on the run off as it lowers the salinity levels which pushes them down river. If wanting a good feed of whiting, fish the area between the motorway bridge and the mouth of the river. Worms, live yabbies and soldier crabs will be the pick of baits combined with a run out tide and fish off the sandbank edges will secure the larger fish. The run off has not deterred the fishing in twin waters with everyone’s favourite the mangrove jack still being taken on bonito fillets. Trevally like big eye and Gt’s are in good numbers at the weir with most fish taking the Atomic K9 Bulldog surface walkers. Flathead have had a run this week with most fish taken between the Cod Hole and Chambers Island. Drifting baby blue pilchards on a snooded rig with suicide hooks has been giving the best results. This mud crab season has been one of the best for years and with a little run off it will get better. Try placing your pots near the drains, creek mouths and down river from these areas to improve your catch.
Offshore has produced a quality mixed bag with the Gneerings showing catches of nannygai, Jew, mosses perch and grass sweetlip before sun up on pillies and squid. The Spanish mackerel have improved with most fish coming from the Jew shoal and north reef. Sunshine Reef held up its reputation with quality coral trout, sweetlip and squire all taken on pillies, squid and live yakka’s. Northern end of the Barwon banks is the wider hot spot where snapper, pearl perch and red throat emperor have been nailing pillies and fresh mullet fillets.
On the beach has seen large dart coming from deep out in the gutter on last of the run out. Best baits have been pipis, mullet fillets and worms. Whiting are preferring the run in tide in the shallower gutters with worms and peeled prawns the preferred bait. All fish been caught in the stretch between the mouth of the Maroochy River to Coolum.
