Perfect Weather Keeps Fish on The Chew!

With the weather last weekend perfect. Both offshore and onshore anglers were out in droves. Starting on the beaches, gutters towards the mouth at the moment have fished the best. Big rods and a big cast seems to be the way to go to get to the deeper water where the fish are holding. Another option is to fish the rocks and headlands were the deep water is a little closer. Good schools of tailor continue to make their way up the coast with river mouths and the rocks producing the most fish, also the high tide is a major factor. Bream have picked up in numbers and size with the lower water gutters and fresh mullet for bait producing the best fish. There have been some nice size whiting in the gutters around Coolum with yabbies, worm and pippies favourite baits for the whiting anglers.

In the Maroochy River the fishing has been outstanding with a lot of different species on offer, starting down towards the mouth, a few whiting have been on the chew just inside the mouth, there are a few undersized fish amongst them so don’t forget they must be over 23cm. The mouth has also fished well for tailor and bream with pilchards and mullet the pick of the baits. Tailor are right through the river with the top of the tide the best time, fast moving slugs and soft plastics also on a quick retrieve have worked well. Local anglers fished mid-week receiving a good bag of tailor all around the 40cm mark. Trevally have also been on offer with big eye and giant trevally the most prevalent. Prawn profile soft plastics like the Squidgy Pro Wild Prawn have been the pick of the bunch. The flathead are also in good numbers with good fish right up to Dunethin Rock, large paddle tail soft plastic and soft vibes like the River2sea Fish Candies have really worked well. Jew also are on offer with most fish holding in the deeper holes around the Motorway Bridge.

The Offshore side of things have been a little different with good squid on the chew around Old Woman Island, jigs sized in the 3.5 and 4.0 are securing the catches. Snapper are also showing a bit more size on the closer reefs with fish up to 60cm being caught. Murphys and Currimundi have been the pick of the spots with moses and grass sweetlip taking squid while the snapper are preferring floating pillies. For the anglers that have made the run to the outer reefs like the Barwon Banks have been rewarded with larger snapper, pearlies, big moses perch and cobia. All fish are have taken a variety of baits such as mullet fillets, squid and pillies. Further to the north of Noosa saw North Reef produce quality jewfish, moses perch, snapper and sweetlip all taken on squid and pillies.
