Welcome Rain for the Rivers!

The rain was a welcomed sight and gave the fish a tickle they needed. Whiting is one fish that reacts well to run off and so do the crabs. Big whiting tend to head up river during long periods of no rain and then will head back as soon as the salinity levels drop. Because of this the better areas for whiting will be Black Banks, Chambers Island and Goat Island. Make you rig is weighted well keeping your line still in the current. Best baits will be worms, yabbies and soldier crabs. Flathead have been productive with catches of nice fish taken on lures and bait. If you’re a lure fisherman try favouring the start of the run out tide with popular areas being around Bli Bli Islands and Eudlo creek. Bait fisherman on the other hand have been drifting small baby blue pillies along the channel edge and over the sand flats on the last half of the run in and start of the run out. Mangrove jack are loving the hot weather with deeper holes up river and the mouths of creeks are showing good fish. Twin Waters is another hot spot for jacks with the trusty salted bonito fillets giving the best results. Lower reaches of the river have been active for Sand Crabs, where the mud crabs are coming from the mouths of creeks and any of the drains leading into the river. Baiting your pots with mullet soaked in tuna oil will improve your catch rate.

Offshore fishing anglers have been rewarded with a good window of weather earlier in the week. Anglers that did hit the close in reefs like the Gneerings, Murphys and Currimundi all reported catches of school and spotted mackerel, snapper, moses perch, grass sweetlip and cobia with baits such as pillies and local squid securing the fish. The mackerel have been schooling up so keep a close eye out when travelling around. Out wider on the Barwon banks produced quality snapper, sweetlip, pearlies, and red throat emperor.

On the beaches, saw good flathead on the chew in those shallow water gutters. Best areas have been the stretch between Mudjimba to Marcoola with peeled prawns and small baby blue pilchards producing the goods. Keep an eye out on those high tide gutters for large tailor, best rig for these larger fish has been the Tru Turn strip bait rigs using salted bonito fillets for bait. Low tide gutters from north of Stumers creek and around Mudjimba Beach have been producing whiting and dart on the bottom half of the run out. Using worms and pipis for bait should land you a nice feed.
