Crabs on the Boil!

Top catch in the river taken this week has been the tasty Mud crab due to the large amount of run off in the Maroochy River. Good catches reported thru out the lower and upper reaches with top spots to drop your pots being around the mouth of creeks and any little drain outlets. Shells have been reported up 18cm with pots baited heavily receiving the better catches. Take note to make sure all pots and floats are well marked as the fisheries are checking all pots and if not marked will be regarded as abandoned and taken. Big whiting have moved down river with the Black Banks, Chambers Island and the stretch in front of Picnic Point some of the perfect areas. Make you sure your rig is weighted well keeping your line still in the current. Best performing baits have been worms, yabbies and soldier crabs. Flathead are on the chew with catches taken on baby blue pilchards and soft plastics. Colours such as bloodworm, motor oil and sight flash seem to be luring the best catches. Best spots have been around back of Goat Island at the top of the tide and the mouth of Eudlo and Petrie creeks on the run out. Mangrove jacks have been favouring the deeper holes up river and structures around the lower reaches of the river. Twin Waters has been common for trevally with most fish taken on surface lures like the Storm Chug Bug 8cm.

Offshore fishing anglers found it hard this week with only a handful heading out Saturday morning. Those that did boated some good size snapper, grass sweetlip and moses perch with baits such as pillies and local squid securing the fish. Out wider on the Barwon banks produced quality snapper, sweetlip, pearlies, and red throat emperor. A good tip with the rivers dispersing dirty water would be to troll a few lures along the dirty water line for some quality spotted and spanish mackerel. Skirted pillies or shallow diving lures like the Halco Laser Pro in colour no 1250 being a proven winner.

On the beaches, saw a big swell lately with a positive outcome of some good gutters along the open beach between Northshore to Peregian. Whiting are popular along this stretch with the lower water showing the better catches. Quality beach worms either cured or live have been responsible for those bigger fish. Flathead are still laying around in those shallow water gutters with peeled prawns and baby blue pilchards showing the better results. Couple of big tailor taken on the high tide with strip baits such as bonito on a Tru Turn strip bait rig around the mouth of the Maroochy River.
