Report 27/11/14

Post by subeditor » Thu Nov 27, 2014 1:32 pm

Now the closures have been and gone now we look forward to the Christmas break, and over the past few weeks everyone was thinking that this Christmas was going to be without crabs. Well as they say what a difference a week makes with the warmer or I should say hot weather the crabs have been on the move. Plenty of reports of over 10 crabs a day, now all we have to do is make sure that the new season or soft crabs are put back to fill out more.
Now while on the estuary scene the fishing has been plenty good with good Jack, Whiting and grunter being landed at most of the estuary along piece of coast line, with Coorooman creek having the best reported grunter coming from over there. There were plenty of fishermen fishing the Causeway Lake over the weekend with the run through happening, and again it didn’t fail with plenty of bream, whiting, flathead and jack being caught.
Reef fishing was a non event over the past week with only a few fishermen willing to go out and only fish for mackerel, and some of them reported some good school mackerel in the bay. They were fishing areas like Finlay’s reef, the Bommy at Farnborough, the Keppel Island and Ritamada. The reports were good quality fish but not in big numbers of fish caught, but at least it would be a feed of fresh fish. While on the reef fishing side of things, let look at the weather and tides for the coming week and weekend, the weather is light north east to east winds for most of the week with the winds reaching about 15knots over the weekend. The tides are around 5 and 6oclock this weekend and are small tides as we are going out of the quarter moon. These tides will be ideal for fishing the main channels as the run will be slow.
On the beach scene there are plenty of fishermen heading out and catching a good feed of whiting and bream from most of the beaches. Those that have been fishing Farnborough and Kinka beaches have reported catching plenty of whiting, bream and some good flathead as well. There were some reports from those that went to nine mile beach and they reported good whiting and bream from up there, someone reported catching a mackerel from the beach.
.
There has been a change in the Crab Shock Classic crabbing competition for the Capricorn Coast, the dates have been bought forward to June the 26th 27th and 28th 2015, if you would like to know more please email or ring the shop for more detail.
