Report 21/8/15

The fishing hasn't changed much since last month. Nothing much will change until around mid-September when things start to warm up (unless we get a significant weather event). This warmer water will result in some species firing up and others slackening off.

Most of the focus at the moment is on mackerel and also the estuaries. When there is good clean water in the bay there are heaps of mackerel. Apart from the macks, most anglers have been targeting whiting, flathead, blue salmon and bream. Whiting on the beaches have been unusually active, with the action being really good over the last couple of weeks. We're lucky up here because we don't get hordes of people on the beaches fishing for whiting; usually you'll have the place to yourself.

Threadfin salmon are still being caught in the river, but the barra have been quiet. They'll get more active when the water warms in September.

There haven't been many weather windows for the offshore brigade, but the limited fishing for reds and nannies has been good, perhaps partly because of the lack of fishing pressure. The weather next week is looking good – 5-10 knots all week – so there'll be plenty of anglers out there getting amongst them.
